5 ways to maintain your mental health while working in a high-stress job
5 ways to maintain yur mental health while working in a high-stress job5 ways to maintain your mental health while working in a high-stress jobWeve all been there. Its 8 p.m. You receive a Slack message from your manager reminding you that your deadline is at midnight, or that a key client is unhappy, or that youll have to come into the office this weekend to schliff a reportdespite whatever plans you might have already made. When these things happen, those of us on the other side of the computer screen suffer. We suffer because we become overwhelmed, anxious, and, above all, stressed. And stress ultimately damages our mental health and our overall quality of life.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreNow, while a majority of Americans reportfeeling stress at work, there are some companies who proactively try and help their employees protect their mental health. For example, early in my career, I worked at Federal Express, a place where leadership offered employees mental health days to ensure we were all taking care of ourselves. They did this because they understood the nature of our work to be inherently stressfulwhether it was meeting a deadline or dealing with irate customers, everyone at the company was from time to time overworked. Because of that, they wanted to help us combat negative feelings. This was, of course, great, but the truth is, not all companies are so empathetic or caring. And understanding as we do that stress isphysiologically damaging, its incumbent upon us to take steps to protect and nurture our own mental health. We shouldnt feel ashamed of investing in as much, either. Rather, its smart to actively invest in yourmental health. Its a matter of being fully present in both your professionalandyour personal life, and of taking action to be the best version of yourself possible. Here are a few strategies Ive learned to be helpful to this end ov er the course of my career.1) Always take your breaks and lunchesAmericans, especially, glamorize over-working. We think that to work relentlesslyand to forgo your breaks during the dayis evidence of your passion, commitment, and investment. As such, many of us do things like eat lunch at our desks or stay in our windowless office for 9 hours straight. This is, in a word, shortsighted.Simply put, people are more effective when they take regular breaksand that includes eating lunch away from your laptop. AtWorld Changers, I encourage my employees to take 15-minute breaks in the morning and afternoon, in addition to going on walks and clearing their head as needed. This, I believe, allows our minds to reset and declutter so that when we come back to our work, our responsibilities feel more manageable.2) Exercise regularlyOur physical health directly impacts our mental health. If we neglect our bodiesif we dont go outside during the day, or exercise often, or go for walkswe put ourselves in a deeper hole. Its not always easy, but you need to prioritize doing things like going to the gym or otherwise being active for some parts of the day. Whether your company assists you with this or not, think of it as another means of investing in your mental acuity.3) Actually take mental health days if you need themThe mental health days I took from time to time at Federal Express were essential. They gave me set blocks of time with which I could reset. They helped me maintain, too, a sort of balanced perspective in which I saw my work as merely a facet of my lifenot myentirelife.Like taking 30 minutes to exercise or eating lunch away from your laptop, allowing yourself to take mental health days amounts to investing in your improved ability to focus and be productive while youre at work. Humans are not machines. Just as we cant operate at 100% capacity without breaks all day, we cant operate at optimal efficiency allyearwithout ever taking a meaningful amount of timebe it a day or a weekaway from the office.4) Unplug from work when you get homeSimilarly, to truly protect your mental health, you must set aside timein addition to lunches and daily breaksthats solely for you and your family. If you find yourselfalwayschecking your email at home, oralwaysmonitoring Slack, youre never giving yourself essential time to appreciate your loved ones or the things that make you happywhich is something all humans need.As someone whos run several organizations, this is a point Ive learned a lot about over the years. Its tempting to forfeit your entire life to the people youre in charge of and the initiatives you want badly to succeed. But giving yourself so holistically to your work breeds resentment and, in time, erodes happiness. Ive benefited immensely from ensuring that my time at home, when Im not at the office, is spent solely with my family, members of my church, or reading a great book.We can only be effective as professionals if we remain cognizant of who we areand what we love doingas people. Being a person comes first.5) Delegate your responsibilities at workFinally, remember not to push yourself past your breaking point. This was another big lesson for me. Early in my career, I thought that to give up the chance totake on morewas akin to forfeiting my chance at a future promotion or raise. But the truth is, if you accept more responsibility than you can reasonably handle, youll end up doing more damage than good. So, when you reach your breaking point, dont try and barrel past it. Define what your boundaries are, speak up when youve reached them, and delegate some of your responsibilities to your people. If this sounds hard, youre not alone. I know many ambitious, inspired people suffer from the same false belief I sometimes suffer from, which is this idea that we have to doeverythingourselves. Its a belief compounded by the anxiety that if were not pushing ourselves past our limits of capacity, were not doing enough to get ahead or suc ceed. But your ambition cannot supersede the importance of maintaining your mental health. Because its true at a certain point, overworking really does become unproductive. At the end of the day, in order to be most effective, you have to be happy, healthy, and mentally balanced. In some ways, then, protecting your mental health is your first and most important responsibility as an enterprising professional. Its an ongoing project you cant afford to neglecteven when you get that late night Slack message. This article first appeared on Minutes. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

5 Habits All Successful Employees Have
5 Habits All Successful Employees Have 5 Habits All Successful Employees Have 1. Be on Time Punctuality might seem like an obvious prerequisite for success, but there are some people who really struggle with it. There are folks who live with chronic lateness- a somewhat tongue-in-cheek disorder that can nevertheless have a real impact on peoples work lives. There are workerswho cant seem to keep a job because they can never manage to make it to work on time.Being on time is important because it shows your employer that you are dedicated to your work. Furthermore, it shows that you are a team player who is respectful of other peoples time.Punctuality isnt only about arriving to work on time it also means meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and making it to any other functions that your employer may host.Being successful as an employee startswith the simple habit of alwaysbeing on time.2. Respect Your EmployerBeing respectful to your employer is simple. Listen carefully to instru ctions, be courteous, and never talk back or interrupt. That being said, sometimes, being respectful to youremployer can be difficult, especially if you havea boss who is hard to deal with. Nevertheless,at the end of the day, your employer is the one who signs your paychecks.Think of it this way a job is a job, and an employer is part of that job. If you can listen toinstructions, be courteous, not talk back, and not interruptyour boss when they are speaking, you can easily be successful as an employee. You dont haveto like your boss, but you should show themrespect, because doing sohelps to keep the overall morale up in the office.3. Show PassionPeople who get to work in their dream jobs are extremely lucky, but not everyone is fortunate enough to work in their ideal role. The good news is that everybody has a passion in life. Whether you enjoyhosting work-related events and partiesor like working in a specific department e.g., accounting versus human resources you can find areas in your day-to-day job where you can let your passion really thrive.Showing passion at work will help you be a successful employee because your employer and supervisors will take notice. Your passion canreinforce morale and show others that you care about the success of the company and your career.4. Show InitiativeThere is nothing a boss loves more than an employee who shows manahme. No matter what, there is always something to do at the office even when you have downtime.Be sure to show initiative.Beawareof your surroundings, the bigger picture of your job function, and the needs ofyour company/employer, and youll be able to find ways to fill in the holes nobody else can fill.Showing initiative can be as simple as taking care of backlogged duties that went forgotten. It can also be something like volunteering to handle something that would generally go uncompletedby others at the company. When you show initiative, it shows your employer that you care about the companys overall succe ss.5. Dont GossipThere is nothing worse than being a gossip. Job sites will always have at least one or two gossips. People who gossip do sobecause they are bored with their jobs and/or insecure about something that may or may not be related to their careers.Avoid gossip at all costs. It brings down morale, distracts your from your work, and becomes an encumbrance to the company because it slows down functions. When people are wasting time with gossip, they are hurting others whether or not they intend to do so. Dont gossip, and dont be a gossip. Youwill find great success as an employeebecause people will like you and find you trustworthy. No one trusts a gossip

2 Ways to Attract Top Talent to Your Job Fair Booth - Spark Hire
2 Ways to Attract Top Talent to Your Job Fair Booth - Spark HireIf youre preparing for a job fair, it is important to think about how your booth will grab the attention of candidates. Attracting top talent at a job fair is very easy when you focus on two key areas.1. Attention GrabbersMake your job booth visible. First, focus on your displays. What do they say about your company and what you do? I recommend that you have displays professionally completed that you are able to use for all job fairs. Yes, this may be costly, but the benefit of having displays that look good and are ready to go for every job fair is worth it in the long run.Make sure that your displays are done correctly and that they are displays that you will be able to use in the future. Colorful displays with graphics that are attractive to the eye can help to draw attention to your booth so that you are notlage overlooked.Invest in a few freebies. Dont go crazy with expensive freebies like canvas bags or hats. Stick with simple items such as pens, lapels, and plastic cups all with your company logo and contact information.Rather than displaying all of your freebies on the table at once, stagger them throughout the day so that you do not run out before the fair is over. Also, think about saving your best freebies for the best talent. For example, you could store your lapels or plastic cups under your booth and when you have a quick conversation with a skilled candidate, give him the freebie along with your business card.2. Dont hide behind the boothOne of the biggest mistakes I see businesses making at job fairs is hiding behind the booth. Many recruiters and HR personnel seem to love to sit in a chair, behind their booth, tapping away on smart phones or just looking like they would rather be anywhere else.Remember, you WANT top talent to work for your company ACT like itIf you really want to attract top talent, get up off the chair, put your cell phone down, and stand in front of the booth. B y standing in front of your booth, you are closer to the candidates walking by, able to easily start conversation and offer a handshake. Show candidates that you are truly interested in them. After all, who wants to work for a company that isnt interested?I have been to many job fairs in the past and my greatest success has been when I stood in front of the booth, smiling and saying hello to candidates as they walked by. You would be surprised at the top talent that will pass by your booth if you are not welcoming and outgoing. What are some other ways to attract top talent to your job fair booth? Please share your tips in the comments below.Image Paha_L/BigStock.com

Make Your Resume Answer Someones Prayers
Make Your Resume Answer Someones PrayersMake Your Resume Answer Someones PrayersShow you understand the employers needs and embody the solution. She was a stay-at-home mom looking for some way to keep one foot in zu sich profession - teaching - while she raised herbei kids.Sound like a humble pitch? Maybe so, but she was the answer to one employers prayers. Programs Manager Jillian Zavitz snapped her up, hiring her to teach at TalktoCanada.com, an online English-instruction site. Since then, the teacher is still with the company and is one of our most consistent employees, Zavitz said. Why was Zavitz so eager to hire this woman? Because the candidate understood the issues facing this particular employer (in this case, high turnover) and was smart enough to address them in her cover letter and resume. On top of that, her resume showed ample, consistent teaching experience most notably, four years employment at the same school. In the past, I would hire people who were qualified - not really taking into account how stable they were. This was OK but not a really great way to gauge who would stay with us and who wouldnt. We had teachers quit left, right and center, Zavitz said. Her resume not only addressed our schwierigkeit in the cover letter (high turnover), but she explained why she would be a good choice, Zavitz said. Four years at the same school This not only tells me that 1) they are good employees but 2) they stick with their projects and know what they want.A good starting point to tailor your resume for a specific employer is to identify what possible problems the company might have. Try to understand the market of the company to which youre applying, and address the difficulties they might be going through.Ladders asked several resume experts for the advice on how to best do this in your resume and cover letter. Their first rule is discretion. Never point out a eignung employers problems its presumptuous, said Bruce A. Hurwitz, president and CEO of Hurw itz Strategic Staffing. Candidates should never tell a prospective employer what he or she needs. Instead, address it subtly via your own highlighted accomplishments that you know would be an answer to the employers problems. Its not a lecture on their weak points, Hurwitz said. Candidates need to focus on what they have done.Selected accomplishmentsHurwitz described a candidate who submitted a resume to one of his clients. Based on the job description, the candidate prepared his resume by focusing on how his experience related to the Qualifications and Responsibilities sections of the job description. Unfortunately, the candidate had forgotten that a few months earlier, he had submitted his resume to the employer directly for another position. The company rejected the candidate because the two resumes were totally different, Hurwitz said.It killed him, Hurwitz said. The variations sapped his application of credibility, in spite of the fact that he didnt, strictly speaking, lie. Afte r that episode, Hurwitz began recommending to candidates that they have a standard resume that begins with a section titled Selected Accomplishments. The benefits of such a section Its easier to tweak for a particular position its easier to read and grasp the essentials and if you do wind up applying numerous times at the same employer, your job descriptions stay the same, salvaging your credibility.Hurwitz recommended using bullets to highlight a half-dozen or so examples of verifiable achievements that address the specific job for which a candidate is applying. This section has proven effective getting candidates to the bewerbungsinterview stage, Hurwitz said. Usually, people who read resumes are tired of reading resumes. They miss a great deal. If at the very beginning a candidate figuratively shouts at them, ?I know you need problem solvers and leaders. Im a problem solver and a leader. Heres why. Heres what I have done. Heres what I can do for you then the candidate will have a better chance of getting noticed and getting the interview.Link the job requirements to your experienceSome resume professionals and job seekers recommend you be more explicit in demonstrating your fit for the employers needs. Shay Olivarria, a speaker and author of 10 Things College Students Need to Know About Money, applied for a job in Philadelphia as economic development coordinator for a nonprofit. Shay sent the usual cover letter and resume, but she also created a table that listed the requirements and how her qualifications fulfilled them.My friends said that my table was ?way too much and ?unprofessional, she said. But the joke was on them Shay scored both an interview and a job offer. (The interviewer told Shay flat out that the table got her the interview.)Heres a sample of how Shays table lookedCommunicationMust be able to correspond by email, letter, phone, and in-person with all levels of personnel.I have worked in administrative positions for over five years. In my l ast position at Falcon Foto I excelled at facilitating projects via e-mail, letter, phone, and in-person with everyone from clients to project managers.ManagementMust be able to manage case workers and clients. Fill out reports on time and as necessary.I have managed up to three co-workers on a project. My experience in graduate school writing reports, filling out reports, and time management has helped me develop those skills.Tiffani Murray has a similar story. When she applied to her current employer some seven years ago, she was an IT project manager with limited experience in HR, and she was looking to transition to HR Technology. She revised her resume to highlight her HR-specific roles and projects. She then reviewed the companys career site and created a spreadsheet that compared it with the career sites of competitors. She didnt get the job initially, but that presentation stuck in the hiring managers mind. Two years later she was contacted about the same job. I got the job, w hich brought me in at an analyst level, but a year later I was promoted to a technology-manager role in talent acquisition, Murray said. To this day, I keep different versions of my resume. I have an HR resume, project-management resume and an IT resume. It was my ability to tailor my resume to the job that landed the gig.Murray helps clients with resumes and career paths through her site, Personality on a Page. One of her tips Your resume must feature quantifiable results that the specific employer will find useful. For example, if the job requires managing a team, make aya to mention the size of the team you currently manage or teams you have managed. If you read that sales have slipped 20 percent in a certain market that youve serviced, make sure to highlight your successes with that market using numbers, amounts, totals, etc., she said. Once you score an interview its a good idea to do more research on the company and have talking points ready to illustrate why you could help the company expand in a certain area or address problems known to the public.Part of getting hired is proving that you will be an asset to the company, she said. Just having a certain skill set doesnt always nail this for a hiring manager, but when you can articulate how you will make a difference, youll capture their attention for sure.Editors Note A previousversionof this articlemisspelledthe name of Tiffani Murray.

Can Your Business or Job Search Benefit from Planned Neglect
Can Your Business or Job Search Benefit from Planned NeglectCan Your Business or Job Search Benefit from Planned Neglect1Imagine this scenario (or perhaps its familiar enough that you can recall it)Youre a freelancer working on deadline. Like many self-employed people, you work from home. But as you prepare to sit down at your desk and start cranking out your clients deliverable, you suddenly notice a stack of bills off to the left of your computer, waiting to be processed and paid. As youre wondering whether you should squeeze in that task before firing up your brainpower for your work project, you landsee out of the corner of your eye that your clothes hamper is overflowing in the other room. Why not just throw in a load of laundry before getting started? you think to yourself. The same types of decisions may confront you if youre conducting a job search. Youve identified three positions online that youd like to apply for. But since youre understandably working from home on finding a job, youre surrounded by countless other possibilities of how you might spend your time. Whether its trying to keep up with domestic tasks, getting some exercise, or indulging in the guilty pleasure of surfing online, the reality is that you only have so much focused time and attention to direct toward your goals each day. This is where the concept of planned neglect can be a lifesaver- or at least a career saver. The idea behind planned neglect is that when you feel overwhelmed with a plethora of potential things to do each day, you can strategize being more productive and successful in the fruchtwein important area(s) to you by purposely planning to ignore the rest of the noise.By channeling all of your efforts and attention toward the goals that matter most to you during any given period in your career or job search, you can harness that much more time and energy for what really matters. Here are some examples of how to practice planned neglect, whether you currently are self-emp loyed, are engaged in a job search, or have a full-time positionLeave chores for after hours or the weekend. One of the biggest ways to recoup your focus and avoid the fragmented feeling that can come when working from home is to stop doing housework when youre on the clock with your business tasks. Your peers with full-time jobs arent dividing their time in the office between vacuuming and making sure that a report gets written- so why should freelancers or job seekers shortchange their billable hours or most productive thinking blocks? It may feel strange at first to just leave the dishes in the sink or the bed unmade, but with the tool of planned neglect, you can get used to it quickly. Planned neglect doesnt mean youll never get the chores done- it just means youll select a specific time to circle back and tackle these tasks, and you wont touch them until then. Its no different, really, than what an office worker is forced to do when he rushes out of the house in a flurry to catch his bus without tidying up beforehand. Hell take care of it after work. You can benefit from this same efficiency by using planned neglect to help you channel your energy toward getting business done, rather than becoming distracted and less productive by splintering your energy in a million different directions.Designate specific times for breaks. When you have the flexibility of working or job searching from home, you might feel compelled to squeeze in a workout or do something else you enjoy, like scrolling through social media, during a critical part of your workday. While your flex schedule does make this possible, the problem with interpreting your flexible hours too literally is that you may end up scrambling to finish your most important goals.Use planned neglect to set aside specific break times that you can use however you wish. If you know you have a half hour carved out later in the day for your activity of choice, youll have an easier time putting your mind to the hard stuff first.Calendar errands and repeated tasks. This form of planned neglect can work as well for full-time employees as for freelancers or job seekers. Everyone has certain personal appointments and errands that must get done one way or another. But instead of leaving this scheduling to chance, take the approach of planned neglect and batch them for a certain time in the day, or a specific day of the week or month. That way youll have the rest of the hours available to go deep into the work that really needs to get finished, whether thats scheduling networking meetings during your job search or putting all of your attention into finalizing a spreadsheet. If the thought of leaving these other random life tasks undone while you focus on your work makes you nervous, just remind yourself youre not forgetting to do these things or ignoring them permanently. Youre just postponing them to help you achieve your larger goals.Know someone looking for a job? Refer a friend to with this link- y oull get a month free service and theyll get 30% off
